Types of Massage for Relaxation
Eastern or Chinese Massage
Chinese massage is one of a range of different treatments – including acupuncture, cupping and Chinese Herbs – that trained practitoners use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). After the initial consultation, the practitioner begins the massage on the back area. With his thumbs or elbows, he uses the press method or compression technique to warm up the muscles and stimulate the blood flow. As he works along the spine, he applies pressure downwards, holding and then slowly releasing. This technique is fantastic for alleviating pain and restriction in the neck and shoulder area. Using the thumbs to press specific points at the base of the head assists with headaches, tension and eye strain.
The therapist moves onto the shoulders and legs before using the roll method. With a soft and flexible wrist, he rolls his wrist back and forth so the back of his hand makes rhythmical contact, warming the recipients muscles and massaging away tension. Pressing and rolling the arms releases any tension within them. The therapist stimulates each limb by holding it with his fingers and thumbs, pulling and plucking so they make a clicking sound.
